First Down Dash Colt Tops Schvaneveldt Yearling Sale
POMONA, CA—AUGUST 4, 2009—All-Time Leading Quarter Horse trainer Blane Schvaneveldt purchased the top selling yearling, a colt by All-Time Leading sire First Down Dash, from Burns Ranch Agent for A Regal Choice, Inc., during the second annual Schvaneveldt Yearling Sale at the Barrett's Sales Pavilion in Pomona, California on Tuesday afternoon.
The unnamed colt is a full brother to San Juan Capistrano Handicap winner Docs First Card, an earner of $96,104 at 2 and 3. Also a restricted grade 1 stakes-placed runner, she has produced Champion Two-Year-Old filly Secret Card ($367,114), and grade 1 stakes-winner Twin Spires ($133,839 to 2, 2009).
The 79 horses that sold during the one-day auction grossed $865,100 and averaged $10,951. The median price was $5,500. Compared to 2008, when 117 yearlings were sold, the gross declined 56% from $1,958,700. The average fell 35% from $16,741, and the median dropped 45% from $10,000.
Many people had predicted due to economic conditions that the 2009 Quarter Horse racing yearling market could be tough this year. The buy-back rate declined from 27% last year to 26% this year.
"Blane needs a pat on the back for having this sale, it was a breath of fresh air," Butch Wise Manager of Lazy E Ranch said on Wednesday morning following the sale. "Once he buyers realized the sky wasn't falling the horses sold pretty well".
"Yearlings by know sires sold well and buyers would pay for an individual, overall we were really pleased," he added.
A pair of yearlings purchased by Abigail Kawananakoa for $70,000 each were the second and third high sellers.
The sale's leading buyer, Ms. Kawananakoa purchased an unnamed filly by leading sire Corona Cartel for $70,000 from the Schvaneveldt Ranch, Agent. The filly is the second Quarter Horse foal out of the Thoroughbred mare Deer Mackie, an In Excess full sister to stakes winner Love Conquers All.
She also paid $70,000 for Foam In My Corona, an Azoom colt out of four-time Champion and multiple stakes producer Corona Cash. Lazy E Ranch, LLC was agent for consignor Henry E. Brown. Corona Cash won 19 races included the All American Futurity while earning $1,542,880.
